The stories of the Bible don’t shy away from the atrocities committed by man. What is this supposed to show?

Oh, I don't know, perhaps Lot *not* offering his daughters to be raped? Perhaps God *not* turning to salt a woman because she looked at the wrong thing at the wrong time? Perhaps, and please forgive me the long stretch of imagination, Lot's daughters *not* raping him to get pregnant??

...Especially since it's all made-up, so they could have made up a less rapey and incesty story.

Unless you think it's all true, in which case I have to tell you a story about Tinkerbell.

If the story was made up why would they put something like that in it if it was meant to get people to follow the religion? Wouldn’t that turn people like you away? It’s almost as if all the stuff in the Bible is all true so it tells it like it is.

Or the story was written by a total sicko.

Because they were disgusting old bastards that wanted to con people into believing this spade of a story was actually real as they harvested pieces of other Meditteranean and Middle Eastern religions to build Christianity. Great Flood? Plagiarized straight from the Epic of Gilgamesh. There's upwards of like, 15 virgin births for gods and goddesses in the middle eastern religions and indian ocean basin.

This story was to make their followers fear god's wrath.

Its almost like you can manipulate your interpretation of something you have as much proof of reality as Harry Potter, Star Wars, or Game of Thrones. The bible is as real as any of those. If you choose to believe the bible, which was amended and written by men, edited at the council of Nicea in 325 CE for what was part of the "canon," you cannot convince anyone to logically believe this is real.

Gods don't exist. Sorry. Also, if you're going to say that say...Judiasm and Islam are following the wrong god, so are you, all three follow the same god, but have insanely different religious rules. Square that circle for me.

Expand full comment

God exists whether you believe in him or not and the Bible has the proof to back it up which is why it is the only true religion. You can choose to ignore the hundreds of prophecies that came true and the scientific discoveries that verify stories from the Bible but that’s on you. You claim that Jews and Muslims worship the same God as Christians but if they don’t know Jesus then they don’t know God.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that you were born in a Christian majority nation. Lucky you, you got the right God geographically! I'm going to blow your mind though and point out that the people born in those other places are equally as convinced their God exists and make identical arguments. So what makes you right and them wrong? Your personal faith cuts no ice with me as an argument.

Jesus is the answer, he’s God in the flesh.

I worshipped this god of yours for 17 years. Not for another second.

No scientific discoveries come from the bible. Not one. Folk medicine may have been used in the bible, but folk medicine is as much science as boiling herbs can cure cancer.

Don't care about prophecies. Prophecies are trivial to fake. There are hundreds of thousands, if not tens of millions of prophecies that haven't come true.

If you mean some of the places that were visited in the bible were really there? Sure. Okay, I'll grant you that. But when the writer for the scriptures can't even get the governor of Syria, whether Herod was alive or dead, whether it was Tiberius' order to find Jesus or Herod's, you simply do not have an argument because within four EYEWITNESS accounts, you have three that disagree wildly, and a fourth that comes up with no information presented by the other three.

Okay. Sure. If that's proof to you, no wonder you believe in bedtime stories about adult Santa.

Expand full comment

Stop ignoring the Testimonium Flavianum which is an historical account outside the Bible that mentions Jesus. That’s all the proof you need to know he was a real person. You say the Bible is filled with folk medicine but how come the Bible was able to tell us about modern health science before doctors such as saying the life is in the blood. Doctors use to think you had to drain your blood to get diseases out, what do you think happened to George Washington? The Bible also tells us to wash are hands in running water but in the 1800s doctors were washing hands in a bowl which is the reason many women died during child birth. Please educate yourself.

While this is correct, the bible also does not shy away from the atrocities committed by God.

If you need to be told that god, violating his own edict of "Do not murder" is wrong, you've lost the plot. Murder is wrong, except when God does it, or orders it, or has his priests order it, or contributes to it in any way, not because my god is a psychopathic bastard that killed people, but because my god is utterly infallible. Good. Go follow some of his barbaric, but perfect commandments then, like killing people who mock you, selling your daughter into slavery, because god said it was okay, for roughly the equivalent of $80 today. Or go conquer the countries around you. Or read from some of a selection of almost 200 passages for you to peruse, because you're so convinced you can't be assed to read your own holy book in its entirety.

Where do you get your morals from if you claim that it’s wrong for God to kill or direct people to kill, how do you decide what’s right and wrong?

Expand full comment

If someone needs a god to threaten them with eternal damnation in order to be a good person then they're just a shitty person.

You should check out Sam Harris' The Moral Landscape. It puts out a solid analyses on how morality have nothing to do with religion but everything to do with human evolution and social progression. If we all followed the morals taught by the christian bible then this world would still be stuck in the dark ages.

Hebrews 10:16 reads "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds." Nobody has to tell you to feel sad when you hear a story about an innocent child getting killed, we know that’s it’s wrong because God placed his laws on our hearts which is why atheists are able to say “you don’t need religion to be a good person.” If there was no God morality would be all subject of opinion. A nation could be running low on food for their people so they end up attacking another nation and stealing their supplies to feed their people. In the eyes of the first nation they are in the right cause their people needed it but in the eyes of the second nation they are wrong because now they have nothing. Who can decide who’s right in this situation?

I go "It is wrong to kill people, because other people deserve to live their own lives without any interference from me."

That's pretty damn easy. If someone is approaching me with a heavy box, I come to the conclusion that "It is the right thing to do to help someone," and that "it is the wrong thing to do to interfere with them."

Hey, that's really simple and it doesn't require a threat of damnation for eternity to make that work!

If you need to be threatened to do the right thing, you are not a good person. A good person will do what is right, regardless of what others say, because the one that says "You must do this, or you will be tortured forever if you don't" does something called "removing the choice." That is now abusive.

If you present someone with a choice, and threaten them with punishment if they take the option you don't want to, that is abuse. It isn't a choice anymore. However, if you offer someone the choice of being good, or evil, and they choose good, they are in my view superior to those who are doing good things because they're afraid of the permanent punishment waiting for them if they don't.

That's how I fucking choose. I already murder and rape and steal as much as I want, and that is zero. I didn't need god to appear to me and say "If you kill anyone, you go to hell for eternity!" I just realized that it was wrong to do this because its wrong to hurt people for not believing what I do.

Oh yeah, there were also 33 people a few years ago who were extremely religious, thought they were good people, doing the right thing, as they crashed three airplanes to attack the US. They were doing that for their god.

I don't give a shit about any religious claim to being superior morally.

Read the holy book. Then read the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Book of the Dead, Greek mythology, Roman mythology, and you'll see how much of the book is fucking identical to the other regional myths. Why is that? Oh. Yeah. Trying to convert someone to a totally different religion nothing like their own is next to impossible, but if you only make it 2% different, its far easier to say that "Oh, but this guy you worship, he's actually the hero in my holy book!" and convince someone to join your cult than it is to say "Well, we actually have thetans in us!"

Same lie. Same privileged information as a conspiracy theory. Same proof. None.

Nothing supports the existence of your god or any kind of benevolence from that god or its religion.

You posted all those bible verses but explain to me where do you get your morals from if you can somehow deem what God is doing is wrong. And obviously creation supports that their is a God or can you explain to me how something came from nothing?

Expand full comment

Ah yes. So its moral to sell your daughter into slavery for 40 shekels of silver.

Fuck biblical morality. I'll take my chances with modern systems. Also, I'm a physicist, a scientist, hence my name being "NUKE," and no, the universe did not come from "nothing" like you suggest.

But since you've invoked the "watchmaker's clause," that something complex must have a creator, why can we only live in a tiny, incredibly small part of this universe? God created 100 billion light years of space, just to leave the overwhelming majority of it empty because of us, who freeze to death at below -40° in ten minutes with no protection, who can't hold our breath for more than five minutes, who don't have particularly good eyesight, heat, or water retention can't live on 60% of the planet we're on? Is this god the stupidest engineer in existence or what? What a waste of space. What a phenomenally poor piece of engineering the human body is then.

God was created by man to explain why the sun goes down at night. We know now. It goes down at night because the earth rotates on an axis. Tell me the next time someone gets a pulmonary embolism too, because that's more evidence of god's utter lack of skill with basic liquid flow and natural filters in our body. God designed our bodies? Pffhahahahahaha. Tell that to this kid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C-8mfIBVAU

So, in your argument, god is never wrong, he's a perfect engineer, he's a perfect planner, but he's so bad at using space and calculating ideal conditions for his new toy, us, that we can only live in certain areas of our planet which is perfect for us otherwise, we can only eat very specific things raw, we have an absurd dictionary of health issues, we can't heal our bodies properly, and god is this great designer I'm supposed to respect...why?

Expand full comment

If you can’t see the evidence in creation then you are truly a fool. Do you think DNA coded itself? You really think that this rock floating in space somehow ended up in the the exact position for life to thrive? You really think all animals came from one living organism in the water? Where did water come from? You really think the human mind which we can’t even fully figure out, was created by trial and error? You know God is true you just don’t want to accept it. God offers eternal life in a place you can’t even imagine and you want to pass that up because you can’t see him or don’t have enough evidence? Don’t you want see lost loved ones? That is truly ludicrous. If you were to actually try to seek God with a honest heart you will find him but your world view stops you from doing that which is truly sad. You need to open your eyes and realize that humans aren’t the center of the universe and there’s something much bigger than us, there’s a reason why we have dominion over the earth and why were at the top of the food chain.

How can you decide what God is doing is wrong? Where do your morals come from because without God you wouldn’t even have the ability to tell me what he’s doing is wrong because you’re trying to hold God to his own laws but those laws are created for man not God.

I know murder is wrong, I don't need some sky being to tell me that, I don't need someone who can't even design a joint properly to not wear out in 60 years and then permanently cripple me to then say that I'm in the wrong because I didn't pray to him enough times.

Wait, why does god not have to follow the law he created? God can do literally anything he wants, including setting a law down that HE THINKS IS PERFECT, then he has to amend the law, all while he's doing whatever he wanted because he's exempt from any consequence? Then your god is a child who has never been told "No" or to not do something and deserves no respect or reflection on.

You don’t have your own morals. You morals come from God because he placed them on your heart which is why you don’t kill or steal because it’s wrong. You probably think you’re a good person but I got news for you buddy, nobody on this earth is a good person so the sooner you realize that and turn to God the happier you’ll be.

How about when instead of god helping his reasonably frustrated followers who were lost in the desert for 40 years he sends a hoard of venomous snakes to attack them. Just one of a bazillion examples of god being a total dick.

Why were they lost again...oh yeah! God made them get lost on purpose because Moses didn't do something perfectly.

Maybe you should learn the context of these stories instead of trying to nitpick the bad things.

I guarantee you I know the context better than you do and I guarantee you I know the bible a hell of a lot better than you do. I actually used to be christian, but one day I decided to actually read the bible from beginning to end to try to be closer to god, and that's what started my journey away from religion. It's funny how the best deterrent from christianity is their own source material, and it's funny how nearly every christian and definitely every christian I know (and I know a LOT of christians) have never actually put forth the time and effort to actually read and study the bible. I don't mean those lame bible studies where they just focus on the one or two good verses sprinkled in somewhere, I mean REALLY read the whole thing and study it. I can tell you the bad FAR outweighs the good in that book. It's amusing how the satanic bible easily surpasses the christian bible on the moral high ground. One bible teaches that woman should be treated as property with no respect and to be used as sex objects and laborers while the other bible teaches that woman should be treated as equals and with respect, I bet you can't guess which is which. Spoiler alert, the satanic bible teaches to treat woman with respect and as equals. That's because the satanic bible was written by an atheist who simply used common sense to differentiate right from wrong, if you really need to a fake god to teach you morals then you just simply aren't a good person.

If you were a real follower of Christ you wouldn’t have turned away. If maybe you read the whole story you would realize that the Israelites were being disobedient and worshipping idol Gods so God gave them to their enemies. The lord told them that is exactly what would happened if they turned away from him but every time the Israelites came back to God and begged him to save them he did just that. God is a just god which means he needs to deliver justice to disobedience so if you can’t see that then you’re blinded by Satan and I pray you turn back to Christ in these last and evil days.

Would you swim in a pool with just one turd in it?

No, probably not. Would you pick out the "clean spot" of the pool? If there's only ONE turd, most of the pool is clean. Drink the water too, its clean! The turd is over there in another chapter and verse!

No. So why should anyone care about the context when the stories are almost without exception horrible?

So it’s wrong for God to punish disobedience? What kind of God would he be if he let wickedness go unpunished? That wouldn’t be a God worth serving.
